When you arrive...
Once you have arrived in China there are a few steps you'll need to take in order to get your Residence permit and settle into the lifestyle. Below is some helpful information detailing these steps. The school will of course assist you through this process once you arrive, but some of this information will be useful to know before you leave.

Medical Information

Within the first few weeks of your arrival, you will attend a mandatory medical exam to ensure you are fit and well. If you are working in Zibo, you will be picked up and driven to Jinan (2-hour drive approximately) and driven home, most likely with colleagues who are due a check-up too so you’ll have company. The medical exam includes:

-
Blood test
-
Ultrasound
-
Weight and height measurement
-
Eye test
-
Urine test
The cost of this medical is covered by the school, you will only need your passport / work permit.

Accommodation
On top of your monthly wages, you get paid an additional housing allowance which will cover your rent and utilities each month. Before you arrive in China, the school will have found you an apartment ready for your arrival.

Travel Information

Getting from Beijing Airport to Zibo:
Step 1) - When you get off the plane, just follow everyone else as they make their way to the security desks. When you get there, you’ll need to go over to the row of finger print machines and (see pic below left) that machine will give you a ticket saying ‘ok’ (below right) – this may not be checked but just keep it safe in case.
Step 2) - Then you follow people again, there’s a queue for Chinese people and one for “foreigners”. On your flight you will have been given an arrival slip which is a yellow card, if not there will be a man handing these out in the queue. There are also desks to the left where
you can go and pick one up yourself. You fill in your name, passport number etc. If you do not know the intended address don’t worry you can leave this blank but fill in everything else. Then you wait in line to go to the desk, do your fingerprints again and they stamp your passport.

Step 3) - Go down the escalator and wait 2 minutes max for the shuttle train to take you to terminal 3, where baggage reclaim is. I’m sure it’s the only stop on the shuttle. This is the picture you see coming down the escalator
Step 4) - Again, follow the crowd of people and English signs to baggage reclaim. Once you have your bags, follow the exit signs and go through nothing to declare. As you come through, you’ll be greeted by loads of people with signs waiting for their pick-ups. If you are being picked up by anyone this is where they will meet you!
If you are not being picked up, you can get public transport from the airport to Zibo. One bus and one train later you’ll be at your destination!

Beijing Airport - Beijing South Railway - Zibo

Step 5) - Straight ahead of you there is a lift, to the left of the lift and a little behind it, there is a desk that sells bus tickets. Show her ‘Beijing South Railway Station’ if she doesn’t speak English – it costs 30 yuan. Go down the lift to the ground floor and leave the building. You’ll be met by several bus stops - find the one that terminates at Beijing South.
Step 6) - The bus drops you off right outside the train station entrance. First, you’ll have to go through security, just throw your bags on the conveyor belt and go through, the same as airport security. Go up the escalator in front of you to the main hall / second floor. Walk straight on for a while and go towards the right of the hall, you’ll see the ticket office there, keep going until you see it. Get in the queue and show them this if they don’t understand you. You’ll need your passport here.

Step 8) - They like you to be at the gate 20 mins before so find a seat within view of your gate and move when you see others moving. Each gate has an A and B entrance, you can use either, but it says on your ticket which is best, depending on your coach number, so that you enter the platform nearest your coach.
Step 9) - Once you’ve found your seat, sit down and relax! You’ll be on the train for 2 ½ to 3 hours so get comfortable and listen out for “ZIBO” station on the speaker. It is not the last stop. Announcements are in English too.

A day in the life...

Want to know what a typical work day might entail? Here is a teacher's account of working at the Xiuwen campus in Zibo to give you an idea of what to expect.

Our first lesson was at 10:40am, this meant staff had to be in by 10am for office hours (OH); preparing lessons, meetings, marking and general admin. The bus into school costs 2 yuan (roughly 20p) but takes a little longer, especially if you don’t live near a bus stop! I usually got a taxi in, which cost around 11.5 yuan (roughly £1.50). Either way, very affordable.
The daily lesson schedule looks as follows: See the photo for an example of a teacher’s timetable.
Lesson 1: 10:40-11:10 (30 minutes)
BREAK
Lesson 2: 11:25-11:55 (30 minutes)
LUNCH
Lesson 3: 1:50-2:20 (30 mins)
BREAK
Lesson 4: 2:30-3:00 (30 mins)
BREAK
Lesson 5: 3:20-3:50 (30 mins)
BREAK
4:05pm-4:50 interest class (only once a week)
Xiuwen has something called ‘Interest Class’. This is held once a week and is essentially an extra curricular enrichment class where the students get to be creative. So, once a week you’ll stay a little later to supervise this class. This gives you the opportunity to get to know students from another grade or class. If you’re at Zia this doesn’t apply to you.
As you can see, your day consists of two hours teaching and you’re in school from 10am until 3pm roughly. This time is yours to manage in between lessons and depending on the time of year, you’ll find yourself with varying tasks to do or down time. For example, at the end of term there are exams so more time will be spent writing the exams, carrying them out and marking. When all that’s done there’s time left over for end of term games and activities!
Often after school we went to the shopping centre, out for dinner or the gym. There are plenty of local facilities to explore.
